I found this grapevine in the Castello Sestieri in Venice. I was struck by the way it intertwined with the ivy, also represented in the St Francis painting, and made use of the shelter structure to grow. I made me think that Bellini's grapevine imagery could have been taken from a similar structure and could have been painted accuracy because this was the kind of botanical imagery Bellini or his workshop would have seen in Venice on a day to day basis in the 1450s.
